The schnauzer is a mix of grey/brown harshcoated herding and catledogs.
The black colours are believed to come from Great Dane.
In the early litters grey puppies were born and very often the were put down,
but a few kept them and tried to breed only Pepper and Salt coloured Giant Schnauzers.
Sometime standard schnauzer has been used to receive better coat and colour.
Since the Pepper and Salt-coloured Giant Schnauzer newer became as popular as the black
they have always been quite few (5-10% of the giant schnauzer population)
and the situation has been the same all over the world.
It is a difference when it comes to the coat, a Pepper and Salt has to be groomed
properly if the beautiful colour is to be kept and the coat should remain harsh and hard.
Everyday grooming is easy to learn.
10-12 weeks prior to a show the coat should be striped to be in good length.
To keep the dog in proper coat all over the year the dog should be groomed
about 3 times/year.
The actual grooming procedure is to strip the hair out with the root so
there can be a new hair growing. If you cut the remaining hair will
be of poor quality. Pepper and Salt Giant Schnauzer has a soft undercoat
that if the coat isn't properly groomed can take over. Sometimes when you have
striped the coat down completely You can clip the undercoat. But you always have to strip the coat first!
There is plenty of grooming equipment on the market.

Showgrooming
Stert to trim = snatch all hair from line 2 - 5 even the tail, It could be hard
on the head but dont give up. 1.
If the undercoat is grey and not so much, you can use a undercoatcomb to take
it away. You have to do it at lest 1 time/week. 2.
If there is lots of undercoat, use a clipper and follow the line 2 - 5. Start from tail to head. 3.
If you decid to comb the undercoat, you have to cut with a clipper, some parts and
you can follow the line 2 - 4, inklude the ears, inside of the thige and part 6.
4. Frontleg. Comb the hair up and out(fig.B), and snatch the longest hair carefulu.
After that you use a scissors and level the leg. 5. Backleg. Same precidiure as frontleg. You need to look after the leg reguleri.
6. Head. Take away the hair between the yeas whit a sissours or a
thinning-scissors (carefuly). When you stand in front of the dog, the hair
donīt have to stand out from the head. Look at fig D. 7.
Araound the ears and foot you use a scissors, donīt forget to pick out hair
inside the ears. 8.
Ca: 8 weeks before show, some dogs whit much undercoat maybe need to be
cut one more time, then you can follow the line 2 - 4, and part 6. 9.
Ca: 4 weeks before show. Clipp one more time line 2 - 3. 10.
You need to level the hair whit a special thinning scissors where the hair
grow in different ways, and the lines (transitions) 2 - 3, 3 - 4, 4 - 5, 5 - 6
and line 7 near the skin.
Good Luck....
